I was on Christmas break in Mount Maunganui, NZ and had the chance to practise my Triathlon photography at the 2024 Surfbreaker Triathlon. I wasn’t paid to shoot the event, but was able to get out on course and get close enough to the athletes to do what I do best…find all the angles!
It has been a while since I have been able to work in the Triathlon event space after a few years of doing more brand work and documentaries, so it felt great to get right back into capturing a sport I really enjoy. This time, I worked hard on trying to sit still in some locations and wait for the right shot, work out my settings, try new settings and see what came out. I find that when you shoot for fun and relieve yourself of the pressure of capturing the day for a client…you can see the event in a whole new way and try out more artistic approaches.
All in all…pretty happy with the results. As important as it is to remember to build the business and client list, it’s just as important to remember to peel back expectations on yourself to hustle every time, and to just shoot for fun. Hopefully, when you put all of your passion and energy into the passion project and practise shoot, your style will come across and impress the right people…earning you some future work!
